New Riff Balboa Rye Whiskey Tasting Notes
Nose: The nose on this whiskey is bright and complex. Poured straight from a fresh sample, there’s at first a big green bell pepper note that becomes more mint-like with a little air. Also in the mix is clover honey, warm rye bread, fresh oak, and a bit of expressed orange peel.
Palate: The palate is oily and rich, showing plenty of classic rye flavors: cracked black pepper, clove, and cinnamon stick, with a touch of pine.
Finish: It gets a little more savory in the finish, with shortbread and chocolate chip cookie notes, but the brighter elements return for the finale along with a lingering orange creamsicle note and a bit of lemon peel.

New Riff Distilling is a family-owned, Kentucky-bred whiskey distillery. Founded in 2014 by Ken Lewis, a visionary Kentucky liquor retailer and entrepreneur, New Riff is led by a team of corporate refugees ranging from craft beer to politics and more. New Riff crafts a range of whiskeys—Bourbon, Rye, and eventually Malted Rye and a host of specialty recipes—as well as Kentucky Wild Gin. Their mission is simple: to someday be counted among the world’s great small distilleries.
