Distillery Information
Jim Beam Distillery in Clermont and Boston, Kentucky is the home of the world’s best selling bourbon whiskey brand. The history of the distillery is longer than almost any family operation in Scotland. Jacob Beam (originally Boehm) started distilling in Washington County in 1795. In 1854, his grandson moved the operation closer to the railroad in Clear Springs. After Prohibition ended in 1933, the determined 70-year-old Jim Beam built a new distillery at Clermont. His great grandson Fred Noe (son of the legendary Booker Noe) is now in charge, while the grandsons of Jim’s brother Park run Heaven Hill. In 2014 Beam Inc. was bought by Suntory, and became part of the Beam Suntory group. Strength and barrel location play an important role in determining the flavors in a bottle of Jim Beam. The Original (white label) and Black Kentucky Straight Bourbons go into barrel at 62.5 percent (125 proof) and are scattered around all levels and all corners of the warehouses. The Devil’s Cut label is a robust version influenced by strongly-flavored liquid extracted out of used barrel wood. Jim Beam makes various other expressions of whiskey, including a straight rye and a range of limited-edition finishes. The distillery also produces distinct small-batch brands such as Knob Creek, Basil Hayden and Booker’s.
